Scott Olheiser

Attorney Scott Olheiser brings over 25 years of legal experience to the McDonough Law Group team. Based in Fruita, Colorado, Scott has experience in a wide array of legal areas with a particular focus on litigation. His practice spans numerous disciplines, including oil and gas, mining, natural resources, property, business law, real estate, commercial litigation, class action, construction defect, insurance, ski areas, administrative hearings, divorce, estate litigation, civil RICO, federal criminal defense, and personal injury (for plaintiffs). Scott enjoys working on a myriad of legal matters with attorneys both in and outside the McDonough Law Group.

Growing up in Wyoming in a family with deep roots in ranching and the oilfield, Scott developed a profound understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities in these sectors, which he adeptly applies to his legal practice. Scott has advanced the interests of individual and business clients in the Rocky Mountain Region and works passionately and professionally to represent clients having a wide variety of legal needs ranging from basic legal consultation and advice to advanced courtroom litigation in all Colorado and Wyoming Courts. He firmly believes client satisfaction demands prompt and diligent focus on client goals and individual needs. Since his days in law school, Scott has favored communicating with clients in an individualized common-sense way, attempting to simplify client understanding of the law as much as possible.

Often, Scott has addressed client needs without going to Court. In the modern world, creative solutions such as mediation, compromise, and negotiation can be helpful. Such options of first resort can reduce the financial and mental pressure of otherwise costly, complex and stressful legal problems. However, when initiating a lawsuit is the only practical solution – or when a client needs to defend a lawsuit – Scott is prepared to aggressively proceed to court.

Scott believes in giving back to the law profession to improve client experience. He has lectured at the University of Wyoming College of Law on Jury Selection, taught continuing legal education courses on trial practice, judged various student legal competitions, and served as the President of the Wyoming Trial Lawyers Association (WTLA). WTLA is the largest voluntary organization of attorneys in Wyoming.

A fifth generation Wyomingite from Casper, Wyoming, Scott graduated from Claremont McKenna College (“CMC”) in Claremont, CA cum laude with a dual degree in economics and government. From there, he graduated from the University of Wyoming College of Law where he was active in the Natural Resources Law Forum, President of the Student Chapter of WTLA and authored: “Cooperative Ecosystem Management: Can an Ecosystem Approach Succeed in Wyoming,” Land & Water Law Review.

Before continuing his practice of law, Scott was fortunate serve as law clerk to United States District Court for the District of Wyoming Judge William F. Downes. Scott based his law practice in Casper until 2023 when the allure of world class mountain biking, skiing, hiking and desert living enticed him to the Western Slope of Colorado. Scott remains a devoted University of Wyoming Cowboys fan and continues to practice law throughout Wyoming and Colorado.
